A new chapter in school safety began today at Palatka Jr.-Sr. High School as K-9 Mags, a specially trained 2-year-old detection dog, was officially sworn in by Sheriff Gator DeLoach. This milestone marks the first time in the history of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) that a K-9 has been dedicated exclusively to school safety.
K-9 Mags and her handler, Deputy A.J. Yeomans, have just completed their training, which wrapped up in January. Today’s ceremony marks the beginning of their official duties at Palatka Jr.-Sr. High School, where they will work to ensure the safety of students and staff. Mags has one mission: to keep schools safe from any form of violence.
Mags was acquired through a grant program, made possible through the efforts of the PCSD Federal Programs team. The grant covered the cost of her training, equipment, truck, kennel, veterinary care, and essential supplies, ensuring that she is fully equipped for her important role.
While Mags and Deputy Yeomans will be stationed at Palatka High School, they will also roam between schools to provide an extra layer of security throughout the district.
Sheriff DeLoach expressed his pride in the new K-9 team, saying, “Mags is an asset to our district, and we are incredibly proud of her and A.J. for their commitment to protecting our students and staff.”
In a heartwarming moment during the ceremony, Mags lifted her paw as she was officially sworn in, symbolizing her readiness to serve.
As the first-ever PCSO School Safety K-9, Mags is already making an impact, offering both a sense of security and a positive connection between law enforcement and students. Putnam County continues shaping a safer future for its schools.
