Black History Month Celebration

On Monday, February 28th, students, staff and community members came together at the C.L. Overturf, Jr. District Center to "honor our local history and celebrate the future" of Black History in Putnam County.

Over 120 students and 60 adults attended the event from schools throughout the district. Schools submitted history displays shared in the Jim Pignato Theatre foyer. PCSD EXCEL students served as ushers. The PCSD Food Service team served a delicious rib dinner to all attendees in the gymnasium. Attendees enjoyed entertainment from the Putnam Academy of Arts & Sciences Dance Team and the Heart & South Youth Dance Team. Chance Rayburn, a student from James A. Long Elementary, performed performed a solo. Students throughout the district were able to view the event live.

The following panelists shared their personal stories that inspired the audience: Cynthia Asia, Rev. Sandra Gilyard, Mary Lawson Brown, D'Arcy Miller, Cornelius Clayton, and Kathy Washington. Rev. Karl Flagg and Angel Duke were unable to attend this event, but will be responding to student questions in a follow-up meeting to be held soon. Dr. Surrency will meet with the panelists next week to share questions that were submitted from students throughout the district. Their responses will be shared with teachers and students following that meeting.
