Fall New Teacher Support Session - November 16th, 2021
On Tuesday evening, November 16th, PCSD mentors and their first year teachers had an opportunity to engage in professional learning about how brain development impacts classrooms on a daily basis. The effects of poverty and trauma on their students’ school experiences were explored with first year teachers from across the district. Groups of elementary and secondary teachers learned about executive functioning & adolescent brain development. Our teachers left armed with valuable knowledge about their students in order to finish out the semester strong!
At the end of the session, each teacher in attendance was asked to complete a survey indicating some of the most significant take-aways from the Fall New Teacher Support Session.
Here are a few comments from our new teachers:
“The perspective I gained on the state of my students during their day helps me better respond to their reactions.”
“My most significant takeaway is about the executive functioning skills. I now have a deeper understanding on how to help our learners pay attention, remember things and plan/organize their thinking.”
“Every child needs care, support and a second parent at school.”
“Not to put adult standards on teenagers.”
“The importance of building relationships with our students.”
We would like to give a special shout out and thank you to 386 Nutrition for providing all of our teachers with drinks to enjoy after a long day in the classroom!
