Katie Hess

Please join us in congratulating Katie Hess on being selected as the recipient of the 2025 Vicki Cornett Caring Award from the University of North Florida!

Katie HessThis prestigious award is a testament to Katie’s exceptional dedication, compassion, and commitment to excellence in education. The Vicki Cornett Caring Award honors individuals who make a significant impact through kindness and empathy—qualities Katie exemplifies every day in her work.

Her nomination came from Dr. Laura Boilini, Clinical Associate Professor and Program Director for the M.Ed. in Educational Leadership at UNF. Dr. Boilini shared a beautiful example of Katie’s servant leadership: after teaching all day in Palatka, Katie volunteered to assist with a UNF Swim Team event focused on team-building and leadership through art. She not only brought materials and helped facilitate the event, but also took time to connect personally with each athlete, encouraging meaningful conversations and creativity. Dr. Boilini was touched by her heart and her dedication.

She also spoke about how Katie goes above and beyond for her own students at Interlachen Jr.-Sr. High School, sharing how Katie personally supported a student who was unable to attend school due to a car accident—ensuring they still received not only instruction, but genuine care and connection.

Katie reflected on receiving the award:

"I am thrilled to have been selected for the award. It was an honor to meet Dr. Cornett, whom the award is named for, and his wife, who served in public education for over 20 years. I’ve been teaching for 15 years, and even though things have really changed over that time, what hasn’t changed is the need for students to have someone in their corner. That’s always been my goal: love them first, and then the teaching comes easier.”

We’re incredibly proud to celebrate Katie’s well-deserved recognition. 💙👏
