Joy and pride filled the cafeteria at Robert H. Jenkins Jr. Elementary School this morning as first-grade teacher Ally Anderson was surprised with a Florida Power and Light (FPL) STEM Classroom Makeover Grant — a $50,000 award to transform her classroom into a modern, technology-rich learning environment. This grant is part of FPL’s highly competitive program that awards only five schools across the state. The goal? To create 21st-century classrooms that advance STEM curriculum and expose more students to science, technology, engineering, and math career paths.
The surprise celebration began with a warm welcome from School Board Chair Phil Leary and continued with remarks by Associate Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, Laura France, who introduced honored guests, including district leaders, school board members, county and local officials, FPL representatives, and board members from The Education Foundation of Putnam County.
Students played a special role in the event, serving as escorts and participating in the ceremony alongside Ms. Anderson, who was previously named Jenkins’ Teacher of the Year representative. Distinguished guests were even treated to a “before” tour of Anderson’s current classroom, offering a glimpse at the transformation soon to come.
FPL External Affairs officials shared that this initiative aligns with the company’s 100th anniversary and deep commitment to investing in education as a means of powering the future. In addition to the classroom award, FPL has also pledged $10,000 to The Education Foundation of Putnam County, bringing the total contribution to $60,000.
The opportunity to apply for the grant came in December, when The Education Foundation was invited to participate. Ally Anderson’s dedication and initiative in submitting the comprehensive application made her classroom stand out among the many deserving entries statewide.
The Classroom Makeover Grant is part of FPL’s broader education mission, administered through its charitable arm, the NextEra Energy Foundation. It is intended to provide funding for software, equipment, books, training, and staffing to create vibrant learning environments in Title 1 schools or those serving a majority of economically disadvantaged students.
