For Health Science students at Palatka Jr. Sr. High School, studying Anatomy and Physiology, hands-on experience is essential to truly grasp the complexity of the human body. One particularly valuable activity is the dissection of a pig heart, which closely resembles the human heart in structure and function. This exercise allows students to explore the intricacies of the cardiovascular system in a way that textbooks and diagrams simply cannot replicate.
By carefully dissecting the pig heart, students identify key anatomical features such as the atria, ventricles, valves, and major blood vessels. They gain firsthand insight into how these structures work together to pump blood throughout the body. Feeling the heart's muscular walls and tracing the path of circulation reinforces their theoretical knowledge, making abstract concepts more tangible.
Beyond deepening their understanding of heart anatomy, this experience fosters a greater appreciation for the human body’s complexity and efficiency. Seeing the heart’s chambers, valves, and vessels in a real specimen highlights the importance of cardiovascular health and the impact of diseases like heart failure or valve disorders. As student Chaia Stillword said, “Dissecting a heart was a different experience from just looking at a diagram, which I appreciate.”
Through this dissection, Health Science students not only enhance their knowledge of anatomy and physiology but also develop critical thinking and practical skills that are vital for future careers in medicine, nursing, and other healthcare fields. By exploring real anatomy, they build a strong foundation for understanding the life-sustaining functions of the human body. Overall, students were so excited about the experience and noted that they may have a room full of future surgeons. As one student, Jada Harrell, jubilantly commented, “Life is messy, but dissecting is messier.” For more pictures from this experience, click here.
