Students from the Interlachen Jr. Sr. High School Aerospace program recently embarked on an exciting field trip to the Palatka Municipal Airport, where they were treated to an educational and inspiring experience centered around aviation. If they didn’t have a passion for aviation before, they definitely found it today!
The day began with a warm welcome from Yul McNair, the Airport Manager, who provided an insightful presentation about the history and operations of the airport. McNair discussed the significance of regional airports and their roles in supporting private aviation, emergency services, and local economies. Palatka Municipal Airport or 28J is one of 3100 National Service airports all over the country. Mr. McNair began his career in aviation as an aviation mechanic in the Navy; his enthusiasm for aviation was evident as he encouraged students to consider careers in the aerospace industry and shared with them multiple avenues to get there.
As an added bonus, one of our homegrown students, James Keeley, now works closely with McNair in airport operations. Interestingly, Keeley is a former student of our IJSHS Aerospace instructor, Jim Payne. Keeley explained to students how he found his passion for aviation in 6th grade, went out on a limb and showed up at the airport to introduce himself to McNair. Later, as a teenager he was able to do an internship with the airport while he was in high school. Now he works at 28J full time and recently started a degree program for airport management.
Adding to the day's excitement, private pilot Ken Wolf generously shared his expertise and passion for flying. He conducted a hands-on "show and tell" session with his personal aircraft, allowing students to get up close and learn about the mechanics, instrumentation, and controls of a working plane. Many students were thrilled to engage with a pilot firsthand, asking questions and gaining a deeper appreciation for the science and skill behind aviation.
A highlight of the trip was the unexpected arrival of a C-47 Skytrain, a World War II-era aircraft that touched down for an event sponsored by the Round Canopy Parachute Team. This historic plane, known for its role in military transport and paratrooper missions during the war, was a remarkable sight for students and faculty alike. Witnessing the aircraft land provided a unique connection to aviation history and the enduring legacy of these iconic planes. Students were treated to a full tour of the vessel and the pilot spent time answering questions and telling the students all about this historical bird. Twice a year, Round Canopy spends at week at 28J jumping out of airplanes! Their leader, Dave Sirak, said, “Come on out this weekend and spend time in our spectator area, you are sure to get a great show!”
The visit to Palatka Municipal Airport was an unforgettable experience for the students, reinforcing their interest in aerospace and opening their eyes to the many possibilities within the field. While we spent time there today we saw many different aircraft land at the airport including two Airforce trainer planes, one Navy trainer plane, and two planes in famous aerial aerobatic flyer Michael Goulian’s fleet. It was a busy day at the airport and so much fun!
The Interlachen Jr. Sr. High School Aerospace program extends its gratitude to Yul McNair, Ken Wolf, and the Round Canopy Parachute Team for their hospitality and contributions to this enriching experience. Click here to see pictures and video of our amazing day!
