In a heartfelt tribute, hundreds of community members gathered on Tuesday, February 11, to honor the legendary Coach Jim McCool as the Historic Azalea Bowl was officially renamed Jim McCool Field. The event celebrated McCool’s enduring impact on Palatka athletics, recognizing both his remarkable coaching achievements and the profound influence he had on generations of student-athletes.
As Jim McCool, his wife, and family arrived at the stadium, they were greeted with an emotional salute from current Palatka Jr.-Sr. High School baseball players and members of the 1975 state championship team. Forming a symbolic pathway, players extended their bats on either side of the road, creating a tunnel through which McCool and his family walked, embodying the deep respect and admiration held for the coach.
The dedication ceremony commenced with an introduction by Ron Dennis, Naming Committee Representative, followed by the Presentation of Colors and Pledge of Allegiance led by the Palatka Jr.-Sr. High School JROTC. Summer Cox performed a stirring rendition of the National Anthem, setting the tone for the ceremony.
Ron Dennis provided general remarks before handing over to Bill Swaggerty, pitcher for Palatka South’s 1975 Class 3A State Championship team and former MLB pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles’ 1983 World Championship team, who delivered a heartfelt salute to the 1975 champions.
Sandra Gilyard, School Board Member and loyal friend of Coach McCool, offered an invocation and special remarks, highlighting McCool’s influence on Putnam County athletics. School Board Chair Phil Leary and Superintendent Dr. Rick Surrency also shared their reflections on McCool’s decades of leadership.
In a touching moment, McCool’s wife spoke about the profound impact everyone in attendance had on their lives and emphasized the importance of faith. Coach McCool spoke at length about the unwavering support of his wife, who stood by him through countless seasons. He shared lighthearted jokes, drawing laughter from the crowd, and expressed his deep gratitude for the players, staff, and community members who shaped his career.
The event also served as a reunion for the 1975 championship team. Their camaraderie and shared memories underscored the lasting bonds forged under McCool’s leadership. Influential community members and former athletes highlighted the enduring impact of McCool’s mentorship, a testament to the strong community ties in Putnam County.
Coach Jim McCool’s legacy, built on dedication, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to student-athletes, will live on at Jim McCool Field, inspiring future generations to strive for excellence both on and off the field.
