In commemoration of Black History Month, PCSD continues its tradition of celebrating the rich heritage of African Americans throughout the United States. This year's event, held on February 16th at the C.L. Overturf, Jr. District Center, showcased the theme of "Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future" with a focus on acknowledging the contributions of African Americans in various fields.
The program commenced with a warm welcome from Shree Clayton, followed by opening remarks from Superintendent Dr. Surrency, setting the tone for an afternoon of reflection and inspiration.
The talented Zoey Rossi from Melrose Elementary delivered a poignant Black History Month poem, setting the stage for a soulful song and a captivating dance by students from Putnam Academy of Arts and Sciences, including Milijah Banks, Stormy Atwaters, Faith Browne, D’Aundriea Atwaters, Iris Fahnbulleh, De’Asia Green, Danielle Bowman, Kierstan Williams, Ariana Hughes, La’Niya Roberts.
A unique and educational segment of the program featured Wax Museum Biographies, with James A Long presenting captivating portrayals of historical figures. Kendall Milton embodied the spirit of Ida B. Wells, Ri’Aysia Summers honored Mae Jemison, and Choyce Rayburn portrayed Alexa Irene Canady, shedding light on the accomplishments of these remarkable individuals.
The event also highlighted a local figure, A. Philip Randolph, with Jocelyn Smith sharing insights into his significant contributions. Brandon Wilson delivered a powerful Langston Hughes poem, adding a literary touch to the celebration.
The Black History Month Planning Committee, in their closing remarks, emphasized the importance of recognizing and celebrating the achievements of African Americans, not just in February but throughout the year.
As a special addition, Attorney Terrill Hill, a sponsor of the event, shared insightful remarks, encouraging students to aspire for greatness and reminding them of the significance of hope and faith on their journey. Terrill was joined onstage by ‘local history’, significant members of Putnam County that students can approach today to ask questions and receive guidance; Sandra Gilyard (PCSD School Board Chair), Justin Campbell (City Commissioner and PCSD Community Liaison), and Chief Jason Shaw (City of Palatka Police Chief).
The event concluded with a note of gratitude from the Black History Month Planning Committee, acknowledging the support of sponsors, performers, and contributors who made the event possible.
