On a cold and rainy December day at Interlachen High School, World History students took part in an annual tradition: hosting their own medieval fair.
“We cover the Middle Ages long before the local Renaissance Fair in our area and it is likely that all of our World History students would not get the opportunity to experience this modern connection otherwise,” said Jessica Cole, history teacher at IHS and organizer of the school event. “So, we bring the fair to us.”
The area renaissance fair Cole was referring to is Gainesville’s Hoggetowne Medieval Fair being held later this month and in February.
For the school’s medieval fair, students participate by choosing various social classes, dressing up, playing music, creating models of medieval buildings, cooking, or demonstrating a skill or task from this era. They have opportunities to present and participate in reenactments too.
“It has become a point of inspiration for many of my past and present students and parents in my five years at IHS,” Cole said. “We hope to continue this tradition for years to come.”
