Mariah Denney is the 2017 Putnam County District Spelling Bee Champion.
Denney is a seventh grader who represented Putnam County Home School.
She won in the 19th round with the word “Threshold.”
Joe Pickens, president of St. Johns River State College who served as word pronouncer for the spelling bee, said it was the most rounds for a district spelling bee that he could remember. “We hit 100 words today,” he told the 16 students competing in the championship.
Jayden Wicker, a student at C.L. Overturf, Jr. Sixth Grade Center and winner of last year’s district spelling bee, was runner up in today’s competition.
Superintendent Rick Surrency presented the students with trophies donated by Karl Flagg and his daughter Karla.
