6th Grade: Slick Tracy( copyright Hazelden Foundation)
The Slick Tracy Home Team Program is an alcohol prevention program designed for 6th grade students and their parents. Using comic books with activities, the program is implemented in a series of 4 to 6 classroom sessions, each 35 to 45 minutes long. Students complete homework exercises with their families.
Session topics include:
· Facts and Myths about Alcohol
· Truth in Advertising about Alcohol
· Types of Peer Pressure
· The Party and Consequences of Drinking
The central story, activities, and tips for parents make this curriculum an easy and fun way for families to discuss the serious issues surrounding alcohol.
The Slick Tracy Poster Fair is the final component of the program, which brings families and community members together to view the students’ completed poster projects
Active Parenting of Teens (copyright Hazelden Foundation)
Active Parenting of Teens, a program designed for parents of children ages 13-18, was completely revised in 2008 to help parents meet the challenges of raising teens in today’s turbulent society. Sessions address topics including:
· Teens and technology (the Internet, social networking sites, etc.)
· The latest in teen drug use prevention (including prescription drugs)
· Teen bullying: how to spot it, how to handle it
· Special stepfamily considerations
· How brain development affects teen behavior and decision-making
· Improved discipline and communication
· Updated teen sexuality issues
Through this program, you will learn the skills you need to effectively communicate with your teen, encourage better behavior, use positive discipline techniques, and teach responsibility.
The program includes a 250-page Parent’s Guide, which offers examples and activities so you can practice your new skills at home. Active Parenting of Teens is typically presented in six 2-hour sessions with a group of 10 to 20 parents.
Video vignettes will get great reactions from parents!
